Investing in our hydroelectric dams makes good sense, and it’s critical that we do so in order to continue providing you with reliable energy. The replacement of Noxon Rapids Dam’s Unit 4 is one example of your energy dollars working to maintain the generation plants that are such an integral part of our system. As a regulated company Avista has an obligation to safely and reliably serve every customer that requests electric or natural gas service. In 2011, we completed a 2.8-mile natural gas line extension in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley that will help reinforce gas service to Avista customers in the Clarkston area. In summer 2011 Avista completed an innovative riverbed restoration project at the Upper Falls hydroelectric plant in downtown Spokane. The project involved modifying the river channels to return them to a more natural state, looking more like they did before early developers cut into the bedrock to collect and funnel water during dry times. Working together with agencies, community members and non-profit organizations, we enhanced the year-round beauty of the river and its falls, while maintaining adequate flows for power generation. The project was a requirement of our 50-year Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license to operate our five hydroelectric facilities on the Spokane River. Read more >
Work such as this two-mile pole and wire replacement project on Sprague Avenue is part of Avista’s Smart Circuits project in Spokane, which involves upgrading electrical facilities and automating the electrical distribution system to make it more efficient and reliable. The project is intended to reduce energy losses, lower system costs, and improve reliability and efficiency in the electricity distribution system. Customers should see fewer and shorter outages.
