Home > Rates and Pricing > How We Control Our CostsHow do we control our costs?
Unlike most businesses, we're not allowed to change prices to offset higher operating costs without first receiving regulatory approval. We must wait until a price request can be filed with the state utility commission for a thorough review and a decision is reached, which can take up to 11 months. As a result, we make aggressive cost-containment a priority to keep costs lower for you.
A few of the steps we’ve taken to reduce our near-term costs include delaying construction of our 90 megawatt Reardan Wind Project, reducing other capital spending and restricted hiring.
We’ve also made investments in upgrading our automated phone system and enhancing our web site. These technology improvements have provided customers with more information and self-service options while reducing our costs. In 2009 our automated phone system handled about 43 percent of calls, which is the equivalent of about 38 full-time employees. In 2010 we'll provide more self-service options.
A System of Checks and Balances
Regulators, shareholders, customers and employees hold Avista accountable for its operating decisions. Balancing the needs of multiple groups in the communities we serve can be challenging. Yet this system of checks and balances often yields the best outcome for everyone.
